6 Outdoor Activities for Summer ‘17
/Temperatures are rising and as summer quickly approaches, it’s time to start making plans for the great outdoors. From hiking to festivals and city walks, Norman is a fantastic hub for those craving adventure. Ready to get started? Keep reading to explore our curated list of activities fit for the whole family!
1. OU’s Campus Corner
If you’ve been aching to get out of the house, Norman’s historic Campus Corner is the spot to be. Filled with local restaurants, shops and boutiques, you’ll spend hours perusing this unique neighborhood – leaving with experiences you’ll never forget.
2. Norman Dog Park
Looking to spend some quality time with that furry friend of yours? The Norman Community Dog Park is an off-leash dog park that lets your buddy roam free. It’s a two-acre plot, located on the north end of Griffin Park, providing plenty of room to play and mingle with other pet owners.
3. Lake Thunderbird
One of the best things about summer is spending time by the lake. Whether you’re an avid hiker or taking part in water sports, Lake Thunderbird is the place to be. Recreational activities offered include boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and cycling. And if you’re a mountain biker, don’t be fooled by Oklahoma’s terrain. You’ll find plenty of jumps and twists along Clear Bay Trails.
If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, the Discovery Cove Nature Center features a ton of displays, aquariums and environmental education classes. Likewise, if you’re a bit of a “fish” yourself, the Calypso Cove Marina is located just on the south end of the lake – complete with kayaks, paddleboat rents and a ship store.
3. Reaves Park and Kid Space Playground
With playground equipment, picnic areas, walking paths, sand volleyball and basketball courts, you can expect nothing less than a good time at Reaves Park. It’s the perfect setting for summer memories with friends and family.
4. Jazz in June
Music gurus, we’ve found the perfect event for you. One of Norman’s favorite events, Jazz in June, will be taking place June 15-17. Each day features a new venue along with fresh musical groups. Free to the public, all you’ll need to do is grab some friends, chairs or blankets and a listening ear for some great tunes.
5. Summer Breeze
Speaking of talented local musicians, have you heard about the Summer Breeze concert series? It’s held in Lions Park on Sundays, May through September. Family-friendly and super casual, feel free to settle down with a blanket and picnic basket. It’s a wonderful way to wind down after a warm summer day.
6. 2nd Friday Art Walk
Local art, music, food trucks and vendors gather around each month for Norman’s famous 2nd Friday Art Walk. A citywide celebration, this popular event brought to you by the Norman Arts Council encourages collaboration for local artists, organizations and businesses of all sorts.
